24 OCTOBER 2017
Today is a world Polio day, which is celebrated throughout the world on 24 October every year. World Polio Day was established by Rotary International on the occasion of the birth of Jonas Salk in 2002, pioneer of vaccine against poliomyelitis. Jonas Salk led the team which made this inactivated poliovirus vaccine. Subsequently Albert Sabin developed oral polio virus vaccine. Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988 was also led by Albert Sabin which aims to eradicate polio completely from the world. These efforts are positive and fruitful since now a very few cases appear only in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
